PROJECT 1: Increase targeted admissions outreach to low-income, first gen, public school international students, black, native, and other students of color.

This involves holding Tufts Admissions accountable to publicizing and making transparent their admissions outreach process. Let’s also create a “Student Ambassador” program that allows current Tufts students from underserved communities to be compensated for going into their home communities or surrounding Boston public schools and encouraging high-school students to learn about and apply to Tufts.

PROJECT 2: Strengthen support for Indigenous students and studies at Tufts and surrounding communities.

As one of the leaders of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day at Tufts movement, we have since seen the establishing of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in place of “Columbus Day,” Tufts’ first ever Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration this past October, and a series of meetings with faculty to institute an Indigenous Studies program at Tufts.  As a university founded upon colonized Native land, Tufts must do better to support the Native students currently on campus, as well as become an institution that attracts and supports other Native students.

PROJECT 3: Increase the hiring of faculty of color amongst all academic departments.

It is not enough to create siloed departments of faculty of color; all disciplines benefit from having diverse faculty that hold different perspectives and experiences.  Especially for students of color, it’s important that we are able to identify with who is teaching our courses and serving as our academic advisors.

PROJECT 4: Institute a mandatory pre-orientation program with an opt-out option.

In order to ensure that every student has the opportunity to form solid communities and mentorships right when they arrive to Tufts, we must work to expand access to a common first-year experience: pre-orientation.  From discussions on the Student Life Review Committee, I’ve noticed a growing tide of administrators in support of pursuing a mandatory pre-orientation program; with enough student pressure and support from student government, we have a good chance of turning discussion into action.
